Men Experience Hormonal Changes During Pregnancy Too

The changes that women’s bodies go through during pregnancy, including hormonal changes, are well known and well documented. But most discussions of bodily changes during pregnancy leave men out of the equation. However, new studies suggest that men may actually go through physical changes throughout the course of their partners’ pregnancies as well. Beyond just “sympathy” weight gain, studies have shown that men’s bodies go through hormonal changes that may help them prepare for the arrival of a baby. Expectant dads may experience a shift in testosterone, along with other hormones, and these hormonal shifts may be associated with a decrease in aggression and an increase in nurturing behavior in men. In fact, men who are fathers are generally shown to have lower testosterone levels than men who aren’t dads. Hormonal changes continue to occur throughout the nine-month pregnancy period, and researchers have suggested that these hormonal shifts may help men become better fathers. Read more…
